From a child interested in nature, observed and studied the plants. He captured the interest of his father's pastor, who was a keen gardener. Did not intend, however, like a father to he studied medicine at the University of Lund, after a year to move to the then recognized as the best in Sweden at Uppsala university. All the time while he was his hobby - botany. With the help of a professor of natural history (as it was then called biology) Olof Rudbeck Karl, was established as a gardener in the university botanical garden. Botany at that time was in the range of training doctors who used herbs to treat. Deepened their knowledge very well during botanical expeditions alone in Lapland in 1732, during which he traveled more than seven thousand. km and described many new species of plants. The fruit of this expedition was a detailed report covering the details of life of residents and medical observations. Today it may seem funny that seriously describes the case of a woman who claimed to have frogs in the stomach 3, which clearly rechocą spring. However, failed to comply with the prescribed treatment by Linnaeus - drink a liquid tar, but preferred to cure vodka, which, as claimed, soothed frogs.
After returning from the expedition for some time moonlighted lectures, which reported their observations of Lapland, also on the minerals, which also is interested. Revenue from these lectures was enough to finance his second expedition, which went two years after the first. During this second voyage fell in love with Sarah, the daughter of a doctor of Falun and asked for her hand. However, the future father in law put a hard condition - it must first complete his medical studies to have a regular source of income. So he went to study in the Netherlands, wrote a treatise on malaria and received his Ph.D. from the University of Harderwijk. His return to Sweden was delayed, as in Holland, he managed to make friends with a few rich people who funded the release of his life-work "Systema naturae." Later this work was extended by him yet, so that eventually in 1770 had a population of over 6 000 pages in three volumes. Then he visited Paris yet, London, worked in several botanical gardens in Holland, and gave there a number of smaller papers. Finally in 1738 he returned to Sweden, already a famous scientist, and he married Sarah Moraeus. He opened his medical practice in Stockholm, and in 1742 became a professor at the University of Uppsala. Appreciated his achievements, was the first president's emerging Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (took an active part in its creation), zaszczycono him the title of nobility, a function of the royal court physician and a member of many foreign universities.
